From the Sainsbury Centre for Mental Health in London there was a report developed to guide organizations towards recovery and wellness. This report could offer some guiding principles for providers in NC to move more towards a recovery-oriented system of care. There are many hurdles to cross to move from an ILNESS mindset towards a WELLNESS mindset.
In 2008/09 the Centre for Mental Health in Great Britain, held a series of workshops in five mental health trusts which were attended by more than 300 people. The aim of the workshops was to identify the ways in which recovery principles could best be incorporated into routine practice in mental health services. Attendees included health and social care professionals, managers, representatives from local independent organisations, service users and carers. The workshops identified key changes required in the practices of mental health professionals, the types of services that are provided and in the culture of organisations.
From the changes identified, a framework of ten key organizational challenges was developed to structure the re-focusing of services around the principles of recovery. The ImROC programme identified 10 key challenges for organizational challenges in moving towards a recovery-oriented system of care as follows:
1. Changing the nature of day-to-day interactions and the quality of experience
2. Delivering comprehensive user-led education and training programmes
3. Establishing a ‘Recovery Education Centre’ to drive the programmes forward
4. Ensuring organizational commitment, creating the ‘culture’
5. Increasing personalization and choice
6. Changing the way we approach risk assessment and management
7. Redefining user involvement
8. Transforming the workforce
9. Supporting staff in their recovery journey
10. Increasing opportunities for building a life beyond illness
